Island Harbour Marina, Newport

As a site of Special Scientific Interest and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you’ll find numerous species of birds and wildlife. Taking a walk along the nature trail is quite the experience!

But whilst flora and fauna abound, the marina also benefits from modern amenities, including the recent addition of a free wi-fi network as well as upgraded hardstanding areas, water and electricity. The extensive waterside car parking is free of charge.

The marina was built in 1966 when a group of local businessmen joined forces to take over the lease and ownership has changed hands many times since.

The original builders, Robert Trapp and cousins Alan and Colin Ridett, saved the Paddle Steamer, Medway Queen, and made it the centrepiece for the marina.

Two miles from the marina are the wonderful gardens and seaside home of Queen Victoria, Osborne House. Towards the centre of the Island is Newport. This elegant county town, which can be easily reached by a pleasant walk along the new river cycle path, offers diverse evening entertainment and many well-known outlets, as well as small, independent businesses. Nearby is Carisbrooke Castle, celebrated as one of the finest moated Norman castles in its heyday.

Overlooking the English Channel is the Freshwater Bay Golf Course, which challenges golfers of all abilities.

Blackgang Chine, the UK’s oldest theme park, should be high on the list for families.
