Broom has a strong heritage in the area and now has impressive ambitions to become net-zero with their Green10 Sustainability commitment. In addition, they have recently introduced a range of environmentally friendly initiatives and a fantastic new café, to ensure visitors enjoy as unspoilt and natural experience as possible. Broom’s heritage in boatbuilding

Broom Boats of Brundall, was established in 1898, and is one of the oldest boat yards on the Norfolk and South Broads. They have a strong history in boatbuilding and provide a small number of moorings at their marina on the South Broads. Their future focus is on protecting the Broads environment, community, and wildlife, whilst opening up the area to visitors and holidaymakers.

Encouraging sustainability

Broom’s Green10 policy for Sustainability has been born from a desire to protect the Broads and its biodiversity for generations to come. They have committed to introduce several initiatives, such as the:

– Installation of solar and micro wind generators on-site,

– Installation of ground and air source heat pumps to provide heat and hot water to the marina,

– Recycling of as much wastewater as possible,

– Improvement of the marina biodiversity by working with Natural England,

– Purchase of additional energy from renewable sources,

– Switch to using electric boats for day and holiday hire, and

– Investment in low carbon leisure facilities, such as electric car charging.

Community initiatives

In February 2022, Broom was ‘Highly Commended’ in the 2022 Apprenticeships Norfolk Awards. As part of their membership to the 5% Club, they have committed at least 5% of their workforce coming from apprentices within five years, ensuring the preservation of heritage craft skills among the next generation.

Other community projects have included a pop-up cinema to raise money for Access Community Trust and providing space to Men’s Shed charity.
